Do you have a passion for community and civic engagement and advocacy? The Government Affairs Director will lead and implement these efforts while proactively advancing the mission of the association in housing and ownership issues. We are looking for the right candidate who is member-focused, a team player, and will take this mission to the next level.

The Government Affairs Director leads and implements Minneapolis Area Realtors® (MAR’s) bipartisan efforts in community and civic engagement, lobbying, and advocacy. The position has proactive work in housing and homeownership issues and reactive, protecting the interests of Realtor® members and private property rights. This may include tackling important issues such as affordability, accessibility, sustainability, zoning, and improving real estate policies or practices. The Director leads this work in local and regional arenas in concert with the state and national Realtor® association advocacy teams, often in partnership with other local organizations advocating in the housing sector.

The Director is responsible for managing government relations and member involvement in public policy proposals or responses, informed by the MAR Public Affairs Manager, the MAR Government Affairs committee, and in strategic alignment with the MN Realtors® and National Association of Realtors® (NAR) advocacy platforms. The Director also partners with other departments to inform, engage, and activate members in advocacy work. The Director must register with the state of Minnesota as a lobbyist per the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board.

The Government Affairs Director reports to the CEO and is the primary advisor on all government and advocacy related issues at all three levels of the association (local, state, and national).

Department Leadership – 20%

  • Set government affairs agenda annually with input from Government Affairs (GA) Committee and Board, and the Public Affairs Manager and CEO. Outlines advocacy and public policy initiatives and concerns ongoing.
  • Ensure CEO, Board of Directors, GA Committee and Public Affairs Manager have in-depth understanding of ongoing issues.
  • Prepare talking points and request position papers and research in preparation for meetings, interviews, and other activities.
  • Plan dept workflow, community campaigns, and projects and manage timelines and deliverables with internal partners and with external stakeholders to achieve department and association goals.
  • Attend state and national Realtor® conferences and member meetings as needed to collaborate across the Realtor association legislative activities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to create team cohesion focused on people development, accountability, and a strong culture in line with MAR’s values.

Member Engagement – 30%

  • Staff liaison to the Government Affairs Committee and any other member engagement body as assigned.
  • Keep all members informed on, and engaged with, local and regional housing and real estate issues to enhance the association’s value to members and to amplify the members’ voices with policymakers and influential community groups.
  • Coordinate member involvement on elections and other issues as needed for campaigns, calls to action, etc.

Public & Stakeholder Engagement – 50%

  • Monitor local, state, and national housing issues, and attend meetings at area cities and counties and the Metropolitan Council and coordinate members’ attendance at public meetings as needed.
  • Deepen or create new relationships with high-level public officials and their staff to build trust and credibility of the Realtors® as the key source of market data and expertise on homeownership and community building issues.
  • Grow or develop new MAR relationships with other trade associations, interest groups, and community and corporate organizations on issues of mutual concern.
  • Develop community advocacy and mobilization with the public to support the member goals.



  • 5+ years in local, county, state, or federal public policy role and/or government affairs experience
  • Project management
  • Willing and able to regularly attend meetings and conduct work outside of traditional business hours of 8am-5pm
  • Technology skills
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, SharePoint)
    • Use of video conferencing technology

The Director works in a hybrid arrangement (40% in office/60% remote).

Physical Demands and Travel Requirements

  • Travel using personal transportation reimbursable for mileage within the five-county region we serve: Hennepin, Scott, Carver, Sibley, and McLeod Counties.
  • May require lifting of 25 or more pounds and walking.
  • Mobility to work in a standard office setting and use of standard office equipment including computers, printers, and other office machinery. Vision to read small-printed materials and computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person before groups or on telephones.


This position is hybrid, based upon meeting schedules and needs week-to-week, but roughly 2 days spent on-site at MAR’s office building: 5750 Lincoln Drive, Minneapolis, MN 55436, and 3 days remote. Employee maintains regular business hours Monday-Friday with flexibility to work outside of those due to external-facing nature of the work.


Compensation is $100,000 annually, with a Total Rewards package including medical/dental insurance, PTO, sick leave, paid holidays, long term disability, short term disability and 401(k).

  • Eligible for annual merit increase and recognition bonus based on performance.
  • Paid time off per year:
    • Holidays: 11
    • PTO: 15 days (increases starting in year 5)
    • Sick:  5 days
    • Floating Holidays:  2
  • 401k:  MAR matches up to 4% of employee contribution.
  • Health Insurance:  MAR pays 90% of premiums for employee health plan; 50% for dependents.
  • Dental Insurance:  MAR pays 100% of premiums for employee; access for dependents.
  • Eye Insurance:  MAR pays 100% of premiums for employee; access for dependents.
  • Short Term and Long-Term Disability Insurance: MAR pays 100% of premiums for employee.
  • Life Insurance: MAR pays 100% of premiums for employee.
