MN Department of Revenue Notification on ITIN as Acceptable for Homestead Status Tags: AnnouncementsGovernment Affairs

It’s official! MN Department of Revenue is ready to extend the Homestead Property Tax benefits to ‘legal residents’ who possess an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number as well as those with Social Security Numbers. This is a huge win for MAR, MNR, as our members were key to identifying this issue, raising awareness, and pushing for change.  More importantly newly eligible ‘legal residents’ homeowners can begin receiving this benefit. This will save homeowners millions starting now and into the future.

This idea was first raised by Guille Garza at a Minneapolis Area REALTORS® open forum. Prior to her highlighting the issue many did not realize Minnesota was not already including this important group of residents. Thank you Guille for joining our Minneapolis Area REALTORS® open forum, participating in the process, and bringing this important issue forward. Thank you to Lee Ann Lehto for chairing both MNR and MAR Government Affairs Committees this year. Thanks to Emily Green, MNR President 2023. Thanks to Pat Paulson, MNR Treasurer 2023. Thank to Paul Eger and Matthew Spellman, MNR Lobbyists who worked on this state legislative change. Thanks to both the MNR and MAR DEI Committees.  Thanks to everyone who supported this issue as soon as we learned about it!

* If you know anyone in your community or sphere that could benefit from this change, please contact them. Spread the word!

** Applying for the Homestead Property status does require ‘one action’ by the homeowner. See the attached sheet for more information.
