MAR Monitors Minneapolis City Council Wage Theft Ordinance Tags: AnnouncementsGovernment Affairs

The Minneapolis City Council held a hearing on July 29, 2019 enacting a ‘Wage Theft’ ordinance that would partially mimic state law. The proposal is aimed at employers who underpay or refuse to pay works what they have earned. REALTORS® were monitoring this passage of both the state law and the local ordinance to insure that Independent Contractors (i.e. REALTORS®) were not included in the definition of employee. The current draft does not include Independent Contractors as employees and therefore does not apply to Brokers who utilized REALTORS® as Independent Contractors. MAR is monitoring discussions with councilmembers who have stated they are interested in a draft that includes Independent Contractors but such a draft has not emerged just yet.
