A cross-sector team including Minneapolis Area REALTORS® met for the first time on November 4, 2019 to help guide the implementation of new renter protections in the City of Minneapolis. New renter screening and security deposit changes will become effective in Minneapolis later in 2020, and the team will act in an advisory capacity to provide input.
Among the team’s duties are to ensure the city explores the proper tools needed to accomplish the ordinance’s goals, review products and deliverables, and provide feedback on communication and outreach plans.
MAR’s Government Affair Director, Eric Myers, is representing REALTORS® on this important committee. He and the rest of the team are committed to the smoothest implementation of the Renter Protection ordinance as possible.
The ordinance makes changes to credit screening practices, criminal screening criteria, and limits security deposits. REALTORS® were quite active throughout the ordinance development process and a significant number its suggested changes were included in the final draft.
There are two effective dates: June 1, 2020 for owners with 15 units or more and December 1, 2020 for owners with 15 units or less.
REALTORS® will receive timely and accurate communication about the changes in advance of these dates.
Eric Myers
