MAR Commitment to Green Tags: Announcements

We are proud to share with you some exciting changes to the MAR grounds!

What began as a business need to resurface our parking lot has expanded into a broader project with water conservation and sustainability at the forefront. Two MAR member committees—Building & Grounds and Environmental Initiatives—came together on this project and decided that this was an opportunity for the association to become a leading example of sustainable practices. Some of the main features of this project include:

  • A large underground water-collection cistern, which will preserve rainwater and runoff to be used for irrigation. This was funded in part by Nine Mile Creek Watershed District, and we’re excited that this partnership will keep more runoff out of Nine Mile Creek (which runs just behind our building).
  • Native plants with deep root systems in order to prevent erosion and send water deep into the soil (versus the 3-4 inches offered by traditional grass)
  • Porous pavers and materials that allow water to gradually seep into the earth instead of run off into storm drains and eventually, our beautiful local water systems.
  • Outdoor seating and work spaces for members to enjoy the nature that surrounds our property.

We have enjoyed watching this project come to life here at MAR, and we are so grateful to the Realtor® members who have been at the center of this project. Realtors® play a significant role in the management and ownership of land and resources in our communities—thanks to MAR member advocacy, we are proud to be a living example of their commitment to good environmental stewardship.
