Below is a list of FAQs regarding MAAR’s Continuing
Education Program. If you don’t see your question on
this list, please contact Nancy Scott. We will respond to your question within 48 hours
via email or you may call us directly at 952.988.3128.
Q: I’m a new agent. How many continuing education
credits do I need and by when?
A: As a new agent, you must complete thirty (30) hours of
approved continuing education. The thirty (30) hours must
be completed by the end of your first full year. You should consult
your real estate license to verify the date your license expires.
For more information on real estate licensing, please see
the Minnesota
Department of Commerce website.
Q: I’ve been an agent for many years. How many
education credits do I need and by when?
A: All agents must complete thirty (30) hours of approved
continuing education. The continuing education must be completed
within the two (2) years prior to each renewal, including
at least 1 hour of fair housing law and 1 hour of agency law.
At least fifteen (15) of the thirty (30) hours of continuing
education must be completed within the first twelve (12) months
of each license period. For more information on real estate
licensing, please see the Minnesota
Department of Commerce website.
Q: How often do I need to take Agency and Fair Housing?
A: Within your two (2) year licensing period the Minnesota
Department of Commerce requires that you take one (1) hour
of Agency and one (1) hour of Fair Housing.
Q: Who do I report my education credits to?
A: According to the Minnesota Department of Commerce, your
Primary Broker is responsible for retaining all copies of
continuing education forms.
Q: When do I have to report my education credits
to my broker?
A: As you complete continuing education classes, you should
make a copy of the continuing education form and hand the
original to your Primary broker and keep a copy in your file.
Primary Brokers will ask for continuing education forms in
the spring. You may use the RE-9 form to report completed
education to your Primary Broker. According to the Minnesota
Department of Commerce, “If all required continuing
education is not completed by June 15 of the renewing year,
a "timely renewal" cannot be filed, and the licensee
will be unlicensed as of July 1 if the Primary Broker has
not received the renewed license by July 1.” For more
information on real estate licensing, please see the Minnesota
Department of Commerce website
Q: How can I tell when my license expires?
A: Visit the Minnesota
Department of Commerce website under License Lookup.
Q: What is the number for the Department of Commerce
that I could call?
A: If you have questions regarding your real estate license,
you may contact the Minnesota Department of Commerce at 651.296.4026.
Q: Are all your classes approved by the Department
of Commerce?
A: Your MAAR Education and Professional Development team is committed to bringing
you the best education possible. All our courses are approved
by the Minnesota Department of Commerce.
Q: How many continuing education credits can I take
online?
A: According to the Minnesota Department of Commerce, you
may take all 30 education credits online.
Q: What do I do if I lose a MAAR continuing education credit sheet needed to complete my RE-9 or I need to know what classes I have taken through MAAR for any other reason?
A: MAAR tracks the classes that you take through our association and the information is available directly on (or from) our website 24/7. Here’s how to access the information to complete your RE-9:
1. Go to the MAAR website at www.mplsrealtor.com
2. Click “My Account (top of web page)
3. Enter your “Login” (MAAR/MLS number) and “Password” (if you have never accessed IMS your password is up to the first 8 letters of your last name)
4. Under the “Education” heading, click on “Education History and Tracking” then click on “Classes You Have Taken”
The information you access here is all you need to complete your RE-9.
Your continuing education credit sheets are very important. They contain the date, course title, number of education credits and the Minnesota Department of Commerce approved course number. You should make a copy of every credit sheet you receive and file it in a safe place. If you lose a credit sheet, being a member of MAAR has its advantages. Contact a member of our Education and Professional Development (EPD) staff and we will be able to supply you with an education history transcript (or go through the online steps noted above). MAAR will only be able to keep education history on those classes you take through MAAR. If you lose a credit sheet from another company, you must contact that company and ask if they can supply you with a replacement credit sheet.
Q: What do I do if I attended a class somewhere else
and was told after the class that it was not approved for
Department of Commerce continuing education credit?
A: This is unfortunate but sometimes this happens at other
companies that try to provide continuing education for real
estate agents. An “Individual” course form may
be completed and forwarded to the Minnesota Department of
Commerce for approval. For more information on this, please
contact the Minnesota Department of Commerce at 651.296.2488,
or visit its website.
